Water
Street - Early 1800s Elmira
igs
in the street? As Walter Cronkite used to say "And that's the way
it is." Well, that's the way it was in Elmira, and most
Southern Tier communities of Central New York, back in the early 1800s.
Livestock were everywhere and when winter rolled around, after a snow
and the really cold weather set in, the air could even get pleasant
out there in downtown Elmira. This is a photo of East Water Street looking
west near where Rubin's Office Supply Store was in the mid Fifties and
it's another great photo of early Elmira submitted to us by Mike Paul.
