Lake
Street Bridge
Elmira, NY
asting memories are kept lasting by the many
picture postcards that have been published over the years of
Elmira landmarks. Such is the case with this one sent in to
us by
Richard Verguson, formerly of Elmira and now residing in Florida.
He says he picked it up at a 2006 family reunion in Elmira.
This
iteration of the Lake Street Bridge was originally built in
1874 and modernized in 1905. The postmark on the flip side of
this postcard says 1908 and so this would have most likely as
it appeared at that time. This span across the Chemung has seen
many changes over the years, having been temporarily closed
in 1959 and then completely replaced with a sturdy modern design
in 1961 that still stands today.
