Newton Creek Mill Dam
Newtown Creek: The Mill Dam at the Foot of East Water Street - late 1800s

he Mill Dam on East Water Street kept the water flowing for grinding the feed sold at auction each Thursday in the Winter markets of Elmira. One of New York State's major industries was, at this time, dairy farming. Which meant cows - lots of them. The mill on Newton Creek contributed to keeping the Southern Tier's cows happy and fed when the dairy farmers' silos had run empty by mid-winter.

This is another great photo submitted to us by Mike Paul. You can view more of Mike's photos of Elmira that he has shared with us by clicking here.
