Water Street - looking East at Railroad Avenue

ere's another photo from Mike Paul. This one is a view of Water Street at Railroad Avenue looking east. Landmark buildings are in the photo including the one occupied by T.J. Connelly's Cash Grocery. The Connellys were big in grocery stores in Elmira and members of their family later worked at the A & P and the Grand Union stores throughout the city.

At your left, the corner storefront was occupied by E & W Grand which was one of the original 5 and 10 cent stores in Downtown Elmira. Also notice, hanging above the intersection, the sign that lit up at night pointing you to the Majestic Theatre, just down the street.

Other memorable sights in the 1920s were the trolley tracks, weaving their way through the brick streets, and the many jalopies owned by the many shoppers who parked them along the curb while they shopped and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of Downtown Elmira.
