robably
the busiest, best known and most identifiable corner in downtown Elmira
was the intersection of Main & Water Streets. On the left is the building
which was occupied by the Werdenberg Department Store. On the right and
across from the Werdenberg building is the building which housed the Gorton
Coy for many years. Notice the street car tracks and a few buggy tracks
in the foreground. This photo was sent to us by Arnold Paul, who owns a
large archive of photos of Elmira in the 1800s and early 1900s, some of
which he will be sending us to post here in future editions of the SHS58.ORG
web site. |
