The Big Game Every year, the football teams from
Southside and EFA met at Parker Field and every year
during our tenure at Southside, the Hornets never won a
varsity game against the EFA Blue We pretty much agreed with that assessment that Ernie's athletic skills made the Blue Devils unbeatable, even though we had some pretty good players ourselves. None of our Hornets went on to win the Heisman like Ernie did, but they were a determined bunch all the same. The Hornets' coaches are pictured below, among them, Tom Hurley, who would later come to be the winningest coach ever at Southside High School before his untimely death in 1982. The new Southside High School Stadium bears his name.
We also are dedicating this page to the memory of one of the Hornets players, Burke LaComb, who suffered severe head and neck injuries in the game that left him paralyzed. |
