The menu above directs you to pictures taken from the official program for the EFA-SHS game at Parker Field in Elmira, NY on October 19, 1957. Just click on a menu item and you'll be taken to that page of the program.

A copy of this program was sent to us by Mike George, Jr., one of the EFA Varsity who played against us at that game. Mike's father, Mike George, Sr. was the Elmira Public Schools Director of Athletics during our years at Southside. Thanks, Mike, for sending us this bit of memorabilia from your archives!

The Big Game
Hornets vs Blue Devils

Every year, the football teams from Southside and EFA met at Parker Field and every year during our tenure at Southside, the Hornets never won a varsity game against the EFA Blue Devils. Many said it was because of an EFA player by the name of Ernie Davis. This page is, in part, dedicated in his memory. Ernie played all three sports against the Hornets and it was always with the same outcome. EFA was undefeated against Southside.

We pretty much agreed with that assessment that Ernie's athletic skills made the Blue Devils unbeatable, even though we had some pretty good players ourselves. None of our Hornets went on to win the Heisman like Ernie did, but they were a determined bunch all the same.

The Hornets' coaches are pictured below, among them, Tom Hurley, who would later come to be the winningest coach ever at Southside High School before his untimely death in 1982. The new Southside High School Stadium bears his name.

We also are dedicating this page to the memory of one of the Hornets players, Burke LaComb, who suffered severe head and neck injuries in the game - ending what seemingly could have been a promising career in athletics.
