CHEMUNG
COUNTY COURT HOUSE
Elmira, NY
geless
Greek Revival Architecture the text books call it. It has stood the
test of time. But for me, it was always the cornerstone of downtown.
For me this building gave all the others permission to exist because
of its stately presence there on Lake Street. It was just a short
block from the church my family attended, Lake Street Presbyterian.
And my mom worked for several years in the County Clerk's office located
in the south annex of the court house. This was after I graduated
from Southside.
This building was erected in 1862 and was
designed by Horatio Nelson White. It made official Elmira's unquestionable
status as the county seat. The south annex was built in 1894 at a
cost of $21,890.85 and opened the next year.
