The boy next to Janet Meeker with his face covered was Jerry Meeker, her twin (thanks, Judy for that info. We'll make the correction.). I saw him a couple of weeks ago when he delivered something for my mother from the florist. I would not have recognized him but he asked if I was Judy and introduced himself. 12-20 Mary Costello - costello@shore.net I also went to kindergarten and first grade at Number Nine, so it was great to see that picture. 12-03 Chuck Bockus - charles_bockus@hotmail.com She was a music teacher at Parley Coburn when I was there before I went to SHS in 1955. She was about 5 to 5 1/4 tall, small, and if my memory is right she was a brunette. She also wore glasses. 11-28 Judy Scaffidi Newman - jnewman@capaccess.org While I was in Florida recently someone clipped the obituary for Alice C. Schmidt, who was a fourth grade teacher at #9/Hardy for many years. She was 95. It mentioned her sister Bertha Coon. I remember Miss Coon very well. However, according to the obituary and my knowledgeable "sources," she taught piano privately. She was not my piano teacher. My piano teacher was Miss Catlin. Did Miss Coon teach in the public schools for a short time? Was she everyone else's piano teacher? Why do I have such a vivid picture of her after all these years? She must have touched me in some important way. I would love to hear of anyone's memories of Miss Coon. Judy Scaffidi Newman (still a temporary Elmiran) 11-23 Nancy (Wood) O'hare - Beecher4@aol.com YOU MADE MY DAY!! THANK YOU FOR NOTIFYING ME OF MARK'S LETTER. I JUST PRINTED IT AND AM GOING TO PUT UP IN FRONT OF MY COMPUTER. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! 11-23 Don Sofia - sofiado@northgrum.com My only regret, is that while I was in High School that I didn't get more involved in all the activities available to me. Now that I'm living here in Wisconsin my wife "Donna" and I make sure our daughter "Kelly" gets totally into everything. And she's a straight "A" student. She must have got it from her mother, I don't recall getting any "A's" except in art. Happy Thanksgiving! Don 11-04 Linda Fields Reynolds - Lyra39@aol.com Any info or help on how to get hold of someone in charge of 1975 reunions? I would like to be on a mailing list or have some contact. 10-29 Lila (Mitchell) O'Neall - loneall@asr.co.pima.az.us Do you know how I could locate anyone connected to the 50 yr reunion of class of '50. I would like to attend, even though I didn't finish school in Elmira. I started at #7, Riverside and stayed with that class for 10 years. If you can help, thanks a lot. Lila (Mitchell) O'Neall, Tucson, AZ. Editor's Note: Lila also left an alternate E-mail address of LilaMike@yahoo.com 09-29 Chuck Bockus - charles_bockus@eudoramail.com The City of Elmira and Chemung County came through this time. Thanks to the fans of the Southern Tier. We ended up with 66,000 fans, an increase of 70% over last year. So the Pioneers will be back for the next five years (2004). They will receive 50,000 a year from the city and county and a new score board from the city of Elmira. They will pay a buck a year for Dunn Field. 09-28 Jim Orsillo orsillo@orthstar.com Bob Jerome died Sept. 26. Many of us guys got our first "dapper clothing" insight from Bob. Jerome's Clothiers was a landmark for many years and the building today no longer exists (Dunn Building). Editor's Note: Indeed we did, Jim. Some background on the store and on Bob - Jerome's Clothers was founded by Max Jerome, Bob's father, who came to Elmira in the early 1900's from Poland. Max retired in 1940 and his sons, Arnold and Robert continued the business at 306-310 E. Water Street, which is where it was located when Southsiders in the 50's rented tuxedos, dinner jackets, cummerbunds, and bow ties for those Senior Proms. The store was moved to the corner of North Main and First Streets after we graduated. Among his many accomplishments, Bob Jerome had been past President of Elmira Kiwanis and the Chemung County Historical Society and a leader at the Mark Twain Society. 09-28 Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net Barb said she was going to tell you this and must have forgot, with all the time she has had to spend in the closet. When we were at the lake this summer, Mark called Sunday morning before they left for England. He asked Barb what she was doing and she said "I am laying in bed with Diane." Mark said, "Oh, I always dreamed about that." There were many of us at the lake it was like a pajama party, staying up all night laughing and talking. The only difference was it took us a week to recover from no sleep rather than a day. 09-28 Barb Tremaine Sanford- esanford@com1.med.usf Hi Everyone. Arrived back in sunny, hot, wet Florida about 4 weeks ago. Fall certainly isn't the best rime of year down here---lots of storms as you've probably seen on the news. Ed and I have taken refuge in the walk-in closet a few times with our photo albums, dogs, bottled water and canned spam, praying not to be blown away---usually end up with only lots of wind and rain--which we are fortunate for----is kind of exciting though. Am feeling great and back to work--talk with Mark every week--he and his family had a really nice vacation in England and he's now continuing to keep busy fixing up his little hotel. Health wise everything seems to be going fine---hard to believe that last year at this time we were just beginning to have all our tests done etc. and find a place willing to do us. Sometimes looking back it's difficult for me to believe it really happened---very emotional time-- still is when I really let myself think about it. Thanks to all your prayers and support it was a success--would do it again in a minute. ( only would ask for more drugs) just kidding. Well time for football--hopefully the Tampa Bay Bucs will have a better year this year--love going to the games--having raised sons have always enjoyed all the sports--no girls -no ballets etc. Think of all of you so often and all you did for Mark and me. God Bless, Love Barb 09-23 Lucinda Finlay Wilcox - TwoLews@aol.com I just discovered our updated web page and read all the news about Mark and Barb, and Bob H. Pat, It must have been a hard time for you. I'm amazed at the Barb and Mark story and have told several friends. It is a wonderful story of generosity and gift receiving. It makes me very proud of our class and I think brings out the best in all the rest of us too. I just met with many members of our old Scout troop, Judy Scaffidi, Jackie Hamlin, Carolyn Barr, Marjorie Schiave, Judy Smith, Nancy Byrd, Jackie Traum, Judy Berger, Eve Crittenden. Some of us hadn't seen each other in 30 years. We are an amazing class and Barb and Mark just prove it. This web site is phenomenal. Bill, my check is in the mail. 09-13 Judy Scaffidi Newman - jnewman@capaccess.org Miss Grove, who was kindergarten teacher to so many of us died Sunday, September 12, 1999 in the St. Joseph's Skilled nursing facility. She was 89. After a long career as a teacher at #9/Hardy she married Father Simpkins of Emanuel Episcopal Church. My mother tells the story of how each fall Miss Grove would be taking her class for a walk and stop to chat while my mother was in the yard. Each year Miss Grove (I can never think of her as Irene Simpkins) would tell my mother that that year's class was the best she had ever had. I was over fifty when I first heard this story and learned that there was a possibility that those of us who started school in 1945 were not the best class she had ever had-- until then, believing every word that our teacher said, I was convinced that we were. 09-06 Pat Harvey Harner - rharner@stny.lrun.com
09-06 Nedra Chapin McElroy - MsCrayola@aol.com The Where in the World is Arnie Greene game is a kick! In answer to the question about M & M Hots: yes, indeed it dates back to before the fifties. It was located across Baldwin Street, I believe, and fell to the wrecker's ball when they built the new bank. I remember going to the M & M for a hot dog with everything and a chocolate milk with my dad if we were 'overtown', and it was such a treat that even now if I'm in Elmira at lunch time, I can do an instant replay of my childhood by going to the M & M for a hot dog. The great difference now, of course, is the price--back in the olden days, the hots were 25 cents apiece, or FIVE for a dollar, as I recall...but, you know, they are still delicious! Nedra McElroy, SHS Class of 59 09-01 Judy Scaffidi Newman - jnewman@capaccess.org Miss King, who taught many of us at SHS died Saturday, Aug 28, 1999. She was 90. I remember her well and like almost all of our teachers part of what is good in me is due to her teaching. 08-07 Charles Bockus - charles_bockus@hotmail.com Just few lines to let you know our Pioneers lost last night to New Jersey Jackals 7 to 4 we had 3,431 at the ballpark. It was Dunn Field's 60th birthday, built in 1939 the same year I was born. FYI - our reunion is Aug. 13&14 (Class of 59). Having a good turn out. 07-23 Christie Day - cad2468@innernet.net Thanks for the note and for adding me to the other fine folks who have signed your guest book. One important piece of info I failed to mention was that I am married to Bob Day, SHS grad, class of 1964. He too enjoyed browsing and having lived on the Southside, he recognized alot more of the names than I did. Again ..thanks for all the work you put into this and I will be purchasing some of the calendars as we get closer to the Holidays. I think they will make swell stocking stuffers !! Christie (Dooher) Day 07-07 BarbTremaine Sanford - esanford@com1.med.usf Hi Everyone,---Well I am finally on line here at Keuka Lake with our little portable computer--had trouble with server --but I think everything is going alright now. Arrived a few weeks ago and have been busy working on many projects around here. This is the first time we have come up for such a long period of time--lots to do. Have found time to fish though. Caught 5 lake trout and one 34" pike so far. We brought a smoker with us -- really great cooked like this. I hope to get to see some from our class while I'm here. Eddie Joe Marks has a cottage right up from us--great bass fisherman. Virginia Ryan will be visiting her Dad on July 27. Hopefully some of the girls will get together then. It's been really warm. I spend much of my time jumping in and out of the lake. Talk with Mark every week or so--seems to be doing really pretty good --much stronger--and working at his hotel most everyday--supervising etc. He and Connie and Andy hopefully will come to visit while I'a! m here--also they ae planning a trip to England before school starts. All this makes me so happy--would love to tell this to all the transplant places that turned us down. I am feeling great--back to my old self--even weigh less with only one kidney. Will try to keep in touch with everyone--will never forget all your love and support. Love, Barb 06-28 Jim Orsillo - orsillo@orthstar.com For the horse lovers in our class, two colts: Wotan and Koba were born at Thundering Hooves their pictures can be viewed at www.orthstar.com/THS. The "Horse in Sport" Arena is now under construction with some minor schedule problems to be ironed out. Regards to all .... Jim 06-11 Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net Just spoke to Barb and she is at Keuka Lake and is able to receive e-mail but so far not able to send. She hopes to get it figured out. They will be at Keuka Lake through most of Aug. If anyone want to reach her they can send e-mail to me. I'll be seeing and talking to her frequently. 06-07 Carl Woughter - CWoughter@aol.com What a great job you have done with this web page! I keep coming back to read more. We from the class of 59 are having our reunion in Aug and I am looking forward to it. Hope you keep building the page. Carl Woughter, Class of 59 Barnstead, NH 06-02 Pat Harvey Harner - RHarner@stny.rr.com Bob had surgery today. They opened him back up to get the abscesses out of his stomach They are also giving him blood transfusions Hope this is the last time His spirits are fair He appreciates hearing from everybody and thanks for all the prayers (they have gotten him through all of this. 05-26 Charles Bockus - cbockus@exotrope.net I WENT TO HOPKINS STREET BEFORE I WENT TO PARLEY COBURN. I WONDER WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BOB VAN PATTEN AND DICKY GORDON? DOES ANY ONE KNOW? THE WEB SITE IS JUST GREAT. EVERYONE KEEP IN TOUCH. CHUCK BOCKUS '59 05-11 Lynda Roby DeRigge - lderigge@stny.lrun.com Thanks Bill! I can't believe I'd almost forgotten Bob & Dicky!! And getting to & from school really was an act of courage sometimes, even for us girls!! 05-08 Tim Hilts - ashton@exotrope.net My niece advised me of the SHS web site and I found it very interesting. I found your piece about Scurvy Erv's very funny and brought back many memories. I think I spent one third of my time there, one third of the time in school and the remaining third avoiding chores at home at 516 South Avenue. In your story about Scurvy Erv's you forget to mention that the store was known as Clark's Variety before Irv took it over. Mother Clark lived just down Baty Street and she was a kindly lady who tolerated all the nonsense we could dish out. When Erv's became my "hangout", we expanded the name to "Scruvy Erv's Gipe Joint." Erv would toss us out if he heard it. Do you remember Connelly's Grocery in the building diagonal from Erv's. It was empty for many years after the grocery store was consumed by the likes of the new Grand Union at the corner of South Ave and Penn Ave. Then Jake The Glassman had it for many years. Oh the memories. Hope I can remember them equally well when I am in a nursing home. Clay was my first barber. Very friendly and kind. I recall the names you mentioned and it was fun to go "down memory lane." Tim Hilts, Class of 1963 05-07 Pat Harvey Harner - RHarner@stny.lrun.com Bob is home after spending another 8 days in hospital. He lost 32 pounds of fluid. He has another drain in his stomach to drain out the infection. He is feeling more like himself again. He is doing a few things outside He drove for the first time today after 3 months. He gets tired real easy but that will come when he gets some of his strength back Thanks again for everybody's support and prayers. Pat 05-06 Ginny Montgomery Ryan - FlaMagic2@aol.com I have a new computer and I need you to send the new e-mail address for the web site. It's FlaMagic2@aol.com. 05-05 Bruce Silvers - silvers@clarityconnect.com Just spent some time on the Web Site and it looks great as always. I like the way you set up the donations page. Just talked to Bob Harner and he is feeling great after his second trip to the hospital. 05-05 Sandy Dean Leach - sleach@stny.rr.com There is a slight change in my email address. It is now sleach@stny.rr.com Always good to check out the website and keep in touch with "old" friends. I'm very careful about the use of that term now. Love to hear from you. So good to stay in touch. 04-28 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu I feel great --far cry from a couple months ago. I'am a much better nurse now--really know what my patients are talking about when they say they have pain. Mark has adopted a dog and I think he's having a fun time with it. We have 2 that we adopted --and as some of my friends can tell you they really are a part of our family---sleep in our bed, and eat at the table etc. Names Ebony and Buc. Joy Utter and I have been writing back
and forth--she doesn't have a computer so we have to use
the real mail---she went all through school with Mark and
was a member of his father's church---She now is a
minister and has her own church In Conn. They
have been praying for Mark and like to keep up on his
progress. I continue to get mail and calls from old
friends every where--donating a kidney has been a very
rewarding experience in so many ways. Why not try
it---I'am just kidding--- but truly there are thousands
on the waiting list--- Love to all and thanks
for keeping in touch. 04-28 Pat Harvey Harner - rharner@stny.lrun.com 04-24 Robert Nichols - nick@tech-center.com
I'm afraid I didn't graduate from SHS. But I lived near Southside High School from '54 through ' 61 as a 7 to 13 y/o first in an older house a block away, in the triangle that was formed by the crossing of Main St. and Pennsylvania Ave. It was torn down in '58, along with a couple of other homes, to make room for, if I remember correctly, a Marine Midland bank. I actually did move next door to Pitt's (he was our landlord, btw) in January of '58, and was there until the summer of '61.We lived in the upstairs apartment over the restaurant (eventually a music store) next door to Pitt's, and most likely laid eyes on just about everyone that attended Southside during that time; sometimes when I wasn't supposed to ;-) I enjoyed your site and just wanted to say hi. I can't begin to tell you the flood of memories and visions that have been coming to mind since visiting. I'm really enjoying the thoughts, and I'm glad you were out there. 04-20 Pat Harvey Harner - rharner@stny.lrun.com We would like to thank all of classmates who sent cards, E-Mail and phone calls. Bob is doing better. He has filled up with fluid, this is due to having to drain where his liver was which takes out all the protein. Therefore he doesn't get around good but this will get better. We found out today that he will not have to take chemo or radiation treatments. I am still packing his incision twice daily. He gets awful bored just sitting around. 04-17 Greg Swimelar - GregSwim@aol.com I graduated in 66. I am just blown away by the SHS '58 website. Wow! It is really something. Thanks so much for the news re: Coach Hurley. He was like a second father to me and maybe to my brother, Mark, also. I will be sending in a donation for at least one seat. 04-09 Peg Halm - thalm@stny.lrun.com I talked with Pat Harner last night. Bob is home from the hospital after 12 hours of surgery to remove 80% of his liver. He is doing well. I could hear him talking in the background and he sounds good. They had some company so he was understandably tired. I believe the surgery was on Wednesday, March 24 and he came home last Thursday (April 1.). She said the liver will regenerate itself but that he will be quite tired during this time. There are nurses coming in daily to pack the incision. Pat said she will need to learn how to do this. Pat sounded in good spirits. I told her I would call again next week to check on Bob and will report at Main and Water. Glad to know that Bill was able to take care of the necessary items with the website. This should keep us going for quite some time. Thanks, Bill! Also good to hear progress reports on Mark via Barb and others. The folks at our church (the one where Mark grew up and his father pastored) are interested in knowing how he is doing so I will continue to pass the information along. Hope to hear from more class members via the website. Keep up the good work! 04-08 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com You may have heard that 2 weeks ago,
Bob underwent major surgery at Robert Packer to remove a
tumor from his liver, gall bladder, and small intestines.
During the 12-hour operation, they removed 80% of his
liver. This was a very delicate operation, as you
can imagine. 04-05 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Hi Everyone, Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Easter. Things are going well here--back working as usual with no problems. Talked with Mark last night--he promised me he'd get on the internet soon. He seems to be feeling fairly well--but still not much strength and still some chest pain present. He needs lots of encouragement--having been sick for most of the past 5 years-- I think he gets discouraged when he still has some bad days. The doctor told him everything is going fine--kidneys great--just going to take time. Hopefully after the 3 months have passed and the worry of rejection has passed --he will be taking less meds and have less side affects. I think he still takes 40 pills a day or so. We had fun discussing basketball during March Madness-- both wanting Duke--Boooo ! Oh well there's always next year. Thanks for all your notes. Hopefully will be home to Keuka Lake in June. Will write again with any news. Love, Barb 03-25 Bob Allen - callen-brown@cyberzane.net Hello class of 58. This is Bob Allen, class of 62. This is a great site. Wish 62 had one. I took over the job at Peckham's from Mike Reidy,(who was my cousin), And worked there three years until graduating into a more serious line of work. I don't have any idea if anyone remembers me but I had a lot of hair cuts at Cooks. I will never forget the Southside of Elmira or Southside High. Bob Allen Zanesville, Ohio 03-24 No name - Btrfly232@aol.com Hi, While researching about High
School in the 1950's, I came across your page in the
Yahoo search engine. So I thought it would be neat
to email you and you could have people of the class of
1958 give me some info for my presentation. What
kind of classes did people take? What kind of
extracurricular activities did people participate
in? Did people have jobs? What kind? Where
did people "hang out"? What did people do
for fun? What did they do on a date? Anything
else? 03-22 Jane Adamy - jadamy@aol.com I graduated in 1968. The class of 1958 website is a fantastic example of imagination and total use of the media. I spent hours looking at it although I did not know many of the people personally, I recognized some names. It was fun to reminisce about high school. Life seemed simpler then or maybe I paid more attention to the "don't sweat the small stuff." The class of '68 seems to have spread far and wide and we have lost touch with many. Of course we had over 400 in the class so it's to be expected. Thanks for the trip back in time. 03-20 Mary Costello - costello@shore.net Thanks for the picture of Dooher's. I had almost forgotten it. My father used to make sodas there when it was Kelly's; in fact, he was one of the Kelly's Corner boys, long before Ted Pitt opened his establishment. Again, let me congratulate you on how the web site is developing. There is something new and interesting every time I check in. Main and Water is a wonderful idea and it was so good to hear from Mike Murtaugh, as well as read updates from Barb on how Mark is doing. 03-20 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Hi, Just a note to keep in touch. Was great hearing from Mike and Jack. I'm doing great and hope to come home to Keuka Lake the First of June or so. Will hopefully stay a couple months. Anxious to spend time with my sons. Talk with Mark every few days or so---he's finally out of the hospital and his chest pain is much better. Hopefully he'll be able to start enjoying himself a little more now. He says my kidney is the best organ he's got. I wish he'd get connected to the internet-- so you all could talk to him. Thanks again for all your cards and Email. Love to All. Barb 03-12 Mike Murtaugh - muircu@worldnet.att.net Barb & Mark have given us something
to savor. 03-12 Jack Wheeler - jrwheeler@lsaf.com I was in Fassett, Pennsylvania recently and saw the article in the Star-Gazette. I thought it was well written and captured the wonder of Barb's gift. Curiously enough, the purpose of my visit was to return Carol [Dutch] to the area so that she would be present for her brother's kidney transplant. Two in the same family! Dutch received her new kidney from her other brother 5 years ago. Now her older brother needed a kidney and received one from a family friend [do I sense a pattern here?]. Her brother Denny [SHS Class of "61"] is doing very well and is on his way to resuming his normal life. Miracles do happen, more often than we realize. Barb is an angel. Denny's friend is an angel. Dutch's brother [who donated] is an angel. We are all blessed by these angels amongst us. I pray that Mark continues to do well and that by her gift, Barb has prolonged his life. As for you; keep up the good work of being the focus of everyone's communication. If no one else has told you........we all appreciate your efforts. 03-11 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Just talked with Mark this PM--He's awake and doing fine-- They did the heart cath but decided not to do the angioplasty--He says now they know what to treat--hope so. Anyways Ia'm relieved. Now maybe we can get him home. Will write again with anynews. 03-11 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Hi Everyone,--just a note to keep in touch. My first day back to work--not my old self yet--but did better than expected--no pulling and lifting of patients -- that will come in time I'm sure. Was good just seeing everyone again. Have been talking with Mark every couple days or so--He's been in the hospital for over a week -- mostly because of electrolyte embalance and just pain. MY KIDNEY is working really great ---too good he says at times and there's been no signs of rejection. I tell him its the best organ he's got. The chest pain has been the main problem little relief no matter what meds they try. I am a little nervous tonight as they have decided to do a heart cath tomorrow with possible angioplasty--hopefully relieving some of his discomfort. Of course I'm worried--he's like my best friend now. He sounds so strong on the phone and not terribly concerned-- this is just one more major event in his long struggle to get well. I know he's going to be allright--he has to be--he has planned and dreamed so many things for the future. Thanks for all the Email--I tell him everyone is always asking about him and I know it pleases him. Will write again as soon as I know the results of the surgery. Pray for him please--Love to all, Barb 03-06 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com I just discovered that the ISP that I have been using here in Florida has been down since yesterday (Friday, March 5) and coincidentally I had been away from the internet nursing a minor sinus ailment since Thursday, March 4. Mail that I would have read since March 4 has been lost due to this ISP's technical problem. So if you sent mail to me or to the shs@enteract.com address, during this time frame, please resend it to me. Sorry for any inconvenience. 02-28 Diana Wilson Patterson - DPatte4979@aol.com Dad came home on Thursday. I spoke to him this morning. The kidney seems to be doing well, but Dad is having chest pains still. He will be seeing a cardiologist tomorrow and continue to do so on a weekly basis. Hopefully, something can be done to alleviate some of his discomfort. Our family greatly appreciates everyone's concern. I will tell dad that you've all been inquiring. 02-27 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Hi, Everyone, Just a note to update you on our progress. Mark is not on line yet but hopefully will be soon. I have been sending all your messages to him which he has so enjoyed. He returned to NJ last Thursday and is doing well--takes 40 pills a day to help prevent rejection - so far so good ( loves my kidney--keeps telling me that its really strong --What ever that means). I think one of the things he's enjoying most is all the foods he can finally eat after 5 years - orange juice, chocolate brownies, etc--had his first peanut butter sandwich today. The doctor says he will feel 20 years younger eventually--continually pray for this. But just having hope for the future seems to be enough right now. I'm finally getting back to my old self again-- sitting around was really depressing me--I'll probably fail retirement. Have been trying to answer everyone's Email-- It's been great hearing from everybody--have read my cards over and over. Thanks again for being there with us through all this. Love To All - Barb 02-17 Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net Hi. I am at Barb's house and she is coming along nicely. But Barb being Barb. I don't think she feels it is fast enough. But looks good and is really cheered by all your kind thoughts and prayers. 02-15 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com Barb called me today after talking with Mark. She says he's getting his hopes up about the future, which was not the way he was before the operation. "Mark's whole outlook has changed," she said. "Why," He's even talking about going to Key West during Spring Break!" Go, Hornets, Go! 02-14 Sandy Dean Leach - sleach@stny.lrun.com Thank you so very much for the website which has brought so many of us together again. But thank you most of all for the wonderful service this website is now performing to keep us all updated on the miracle of Barb and Mark. I am deeply touched to be a part of the Class of '58 and honored to be able to add my prayers and love to the many many good wishes for Barb and Mark. Who would ever have thought we would be blessed to be a small part of this gift of life. It overwhelms me with emotion each time I come here to this website and read the updates and all the love and caring being expressed. God bless you! 02-14 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Just me writing to thankyou all for your cards, calls, prayers etc. We truly couldn't have done this without you. I'm faxing a long letter to Bill to post on this page ---sharing some of our experiences over the last 5 months. Love to you all, Barb Tremaine Sanford 02-13 Diana Wilson Patterson - DPatte4979@aol.com Hi Everyone, I'm Mark Wilson's daughter, Diana. On behalf of my father and my entire family, I would like to thank all of you for your many prayers, letters, and phone calls. It has been such a comfort to know how many special people there are in the world. I don't think words can describe the generosity with which Barb gave of herself. Our family shall be forever indebited to her. I, too, think the Elmira SHS Class of '58 was and is a very special group of people. Dad was released from the hospital
yesterday and is doing well. His recovery, however,
will be ongoing for quite some time. I believe it
will be about 90 days until he really starts
feeling relatively strong and up to par. He
will be staying with my brother Mark in Peoria for the
next couple of weeks as he must return to the hospital
daily for monitoring and a 6 hour IV treatment. Diana Wilson Patterson - (Freehold, NJ) and family 02-11 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com I spoke with Barb this afternoon - she is back home in Florida, sounds great and is well on her way back to her old self. Mark should probably be released from the hospital soon and he will be staying with his family there in Peoria for several weeks before going back home to New Jersey. Barb said your many cards were welcome sights and that she and Mark were glad to have received so many calls from old friends. I suspect that we'll be hearing from Barb pretty soon here on the website as she begins to get her strength back. 02-11 Peg Fawell Halm - thalm@stny.lrun.com Have been following the updates on Mark and Barb with great interest. This isn't something you hear of every day. Garth Wade from the Star Gazette is also following this (maybe a story!). When I talked with him, which was only a day or two following the surgery, he said he had talked with one of them ( I think Barb - but that's how my memory is functioning). I haven't heard back or seen anything in the paper as yet. For Mark - the folks at his old church (Franklin St.. Presbyterian, now Westminster) are praying for him. There are still some folks there who remember the entire Wilson family! Keep up the good work with this page. It is nice to know how things are progressing and best wishes to Mark and Barb. Peg 02-09 Mary Costello - costello@shore.net Bill, thank you so much for using your web site this way. I have always liked it but could not have imagined the value it would eventually have. I talked with Barb in the hospital and she seemed good, in less pain, but tired. Thanks again for performing this valuable service. Mary 02-09 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com So many of you have responded and contacted Mark and Barb and sent cards that it makes me want to say that there's something special about the Class of 58 at Southside High School. Folks that I've met in my adult years that I've told about Barb and Mark just shake their heads in amazement. And now I suspect they are doing the same thing as they hear about all the friends that have risen to cheer Barb and Mark on to better health in years ahead by calling them and writing to them and hanging in there with them. If I played even a small part in this amazing story, it was merely to create a "public forum" for news and comments to be shared among our special alumni. If any credit is due here, it goes first to Barb for doing what she did and then to everyone who raised us (yes, even including the faculty at Southside); to have groomed, inside of us all, this special relationship that we still share today, 40 years after parting and going our own separate ways. I am thankful for all of you who have hung in there with Barb and Mark this past week and will be still hanging in there in weeks and months ahead as they recuperate. Boy, am I proud of my old friends from Southside. 02-07 Nancy Wood - BEECHER4@aol.com
Spoke with Mark on Friday afternoon. He sounds good, although a bit tired. Said he was taking 60 pills a day. Left a message for Barb on Sat. at the Wilson's. Thank you for keeping us informed of their progress and in our prayers. Nancy Wood O'Hare 02-07 Carole Boyd- carole@pop.jaxnet.com
I got a card off yesterday to both Barb and Mark at Mark Jr.'s address. Thanks for your updates and keeping all of us informed on their progress. We're all praying for their speedy recovery and regained strength each day. Carole Boyd - Jax, FL 02-06 Peggy Lewis Dougherty - Docs1Lady@aol.com God has a special Plan for Each of Us. How Beautiful when we make choices for His Will To Be Done. Bless you Barb, and for Mark, prayers for a speedy, healing recovery. 02-06 Bill Thomas - WThomas58@worldnet.att.net I always knew Barb was special. I have prayed for both their successful recovery. After a long career in Police work, I went back to school and studied nursing and became a nurse 10 years ago. I have been doing Dialysis Nursing for some time now and I am more than familiar with what they both have gone thru. I can't pray hard enough for Mark to have a complete and successful recovery for a long life with Barbs kidney. The Lord takes special interest in people that give the gift of life, now all of us that knew or know her can see why she has always been very special and brought so much love to the class of 58. My prayers are with you both. God loves you and so do I. Bill Thomas, Nashua, New Hampshire. 02-05 John Friends - JohnFriends@compuserve.com Bill, thanks for the phone numbers. I also spoke with Mark and Barb. Although Mark is still a little confused, he was plainly pleased that I called. 02-05 James Orsillo - orsillo@orthstar.com Fantastic! Wow! There are not words to describe the beauty of the gift of a quality life... Love to you both.... 02-04 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com I spoke with Mark and Barb this evening. Both sounded great - Mark is a bit groggy, but doing well. Barb will be getting out of the hospital tomorrow and will be staying with the Wilsons for a few days there in Peoria. Here are some phone numbers if you'd like to call them after tomorrow: Mark - in the hospital - (309) 655-4255 02-03 Jon McNeal - JonMcneal@aol.com I'm a few days late, but I wish you both a speedy and successful recovery. My prayers are with you. God Bless! 02-02 Bruce Silvers - silvers@clarityconnect.com Just spoke to Connie Wilson an hour ago (in the mean time had to eat dinner) she says the surgery yesterday went real will with the transplant. Mark was making urine within 5 minutes after the transplant. Bet he wishes it were sperm. Barb was in considerable pain as a result of the cut. It was in a painful place I guess. The direct number to Barbs room is 309 655 4254. Mark is still in intensive care so no number. Mark is expected to be in the hospital until the end of the week and then spend 4-6 week with his son. Hospital is in Peoria. An appropiate place for a new kidney I expect. Well at this point things look good so we'll keep them crossed. 02-02 Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net Just spoke to Barb doing OK in a lot of pain, she hopes to go home Fri. Been out of bed twice but feels groggy. I'll call her in a couple of days. She says Mark's kidney is doing good and he should be down on the floor tomorrow. She says thanks for all the prayers and to keep them up. 02-01 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com I spoke with Mark's daughter-in-law, Tina, in Peoria this evening and she says that the operation was a big success and that both Mark and Barb are doing very well. Mark is still under the anesthesia and in recovery and Barb is in a lot of pain and in ICU. Tina said that assuming the best, Mark could be in the hospital for about 2 more weeks, but that Barb could be out in a couple of days. She also said that if you want to send a card to either or both of them, she will make sure it gets to them asap. You can send them mail in care of: Mark Wilson, Jr. 02-01 Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net Barb came through the surgery and is doing quite well and is resting in ICU. Mark is through surgery but is in recovery so have no indication how he is doing I'll call tomorrow for an update. 01-30 Nancy Wood O'Hare - BEECHER4@aol.com 01-28 Larry Bohl - lbohl@binghamton.edu Just received e-mail from Barb regarding the transplant for Mark. The messages I have read express my feelings as well. My prayers go out to both Barb and Mark. May God's blessings be on them both and hope for a speedy recovery. 01-28 Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com Information to send cards or bouquets, news can be obtained at the Saint Francis Medical Center Web Site. There is also a list of phone numbers at that site if you want to check on their status after the operation. I will keep updating here if I hear any news. 01-27 Ginny Montgomery - ERyan12624@aol.com Just read the letter concerning Mark Wilson and Barb Tremaine. What a woman she is. One of a kind. Hoping for a quick and full recovery for them. Our thoughts and prayers are with them both. We'll be anxiously waiting to hear the good news. Ed and Ginny Ryan 01-27 Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net I talked to her on Monday. The girls are getting together Fri. and we will set up a prayer time. She has a real positive attitude. Praying all goes well 01-27 Jack Wheeler - JRWHEELER@lsaf.com Wow! This is a true expression of love for another person. Thanks for letting me know about this. My wife's older brother is scheduled for a kidney transplant February 15th in Buffalo, also from an un-related donor. There are some true saints out there. God bless them all. I will pray that everything goes fine for Mark and Barb. 01-26 Barb Tremaine - esanford@com1.med.usf.edu Have waited so long to write always thinking that something would stop the complicated process that we've been going through. But I guess it can't get much closer as Mark's already there and I'm leaving Thurs. The transplant will be taking place in Peoria, Ill. Mon AM (Feb 1) at St Frances Hospital. Mark's son lives there. We've been months going through millions of tests etc. Had great trouble finding someone who would do us as I'm an unrelated donor (they think I'm crazy) and Mark's such a big risk. Well, we're going to be fine and hopefully Mark's going to get his life back. Please pray that this old kidney of mine will do a great job for him. Will write more when home again taking it easy for a while. As Always, Barb. ©
