I really enjoyed looking at all those classic cars.  Can you please get more pictures.

Just wanted to wish all my fellow classmates a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Everybody keep in touch. Bill, the site is really great. I check it all the time. Larry

12-17-98 - Bill Thomas - WThomas58@Worldnet.att.net

This AM I was having a great time thumbing thru all the messages at the Corner of Main and Water when my heart stopped. When I wrote you looking for Don Sofia and Nancy, I was also in the process of looking for Gene Augustine. I knew Gene still lived in Elmira and was talking with my brother to help me find him. I was very saddened to see that Gene had a heart attack and passed away. Tears came to my eyes because Gene was such a good friend of mine. We spent so many hours together playing baseball. He followed in his brother Joe's footsteps regarding sports. Gene was an icon in sports in high school. Gene, myself. and several others organized and sought after the Penn. Railroad to sponsor us for little league baseball (Babe Ruth League) our freshman and sophmore years, and they did. I could go on forever. He was a very special person and his family, friends, and all of the class of 58 will miss him. Please post my regards to all of his family and friends. I am speechless, he was the iron man to me. Thanks Bill Thomas.

I had posted Bill Thomas' E-Mail address incorrectly here on the bulletin board and in the E-Mail listing of alumni. His correct e-mail address appears below in the next entry.

12-11-98 - Bill Thomas - WThomas58@Worldnet.att.net

I'm looking for two classmates Donald Sofia who used to live on Kenyon St. and an EFA friend Nancy Shaft, do not know her married name. If anyone knows please let me know.

From the Class of 56. Great job on the home page! Brings back a lot of happy memories of a town & time that were really unique.  Wish I had the time to visit the home town more often than I do, but owning a successful ad agency makes long vacations nearly impossible.  Thankfully though, your site, the Star Gazette online site & the "Elmira, NY a Place to Call Home" site allows me to keep in touch.

Subject: Your Website, 50's Cars and remembering 1958

I have become a fan of your Website at The SHS Class of 58 Home Page and do like the link at Class of 58 Classic Cars.  However I do have several comments, suggestions and question to pose that emanates from our shared love of this 58 nostalgia.  First on your classic car page you have no '58 Thunderbirds showing. Ironically the '58 Bird picture has a '58 label in the protocal text, but of course it comes up all '56.  I have attached pics of my 58 bird.  You might want to use a 58 pic on your car page and elsewhere in your site.  The obvious reason of course is the year we are dealing with.  I have about 100 more JPEGs of my 58 but this is the one I chose to attach.

You can see quite a large pic selection of my car, a Belgian 58 and a Pennsylvannia 1960 sunroof bird at The Squarebirds Website.  This is the only Website that we know of in the world dedicated only to the 1958 thru 60 Thunderbird.  We have pics of about 50 other cars posted thus far into our construction of the Site.  Please check it out and bookmark it to follow us along.  Currently the Squarebird Site is maintained on a private server in Belgium and is often times difficult to access because of heavy traffic.  I ask that you have patience with us until you can surf in and check us out.

Lastly, I would like to share with you something that I consider very special about the 1958 Thunderbird Hardtop.  First, It was the 1958 Motortrend magazine's Car of the Year.  A registry data base of 58 HTs has been maintained by the Vintage Thunderbird Club International for the past 20 years.  In January of 1998, the cars 40th year, the data base was turned over to me for maintenance and it's continued growth.  On 1/1/98, after 20 years of the registry's existance, only 100 operable cars were registered throughout the world.  Today, almost one year later, I have increased the number of known 58 HTs thru out the world to 144 operable vehicles.  This is still the least number of Thunderbirds known to exist of all models and years of production. Even less than the small birds, the 58 convertable, or the 62 roadsters.

Looking for classmate Donald Sofia and EFA or Ernie Davis E-mail address

11-08-98 - Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com

My cousin, some of you may know her, Marlene Swimelar Ascherl (SHS Class of 57), is a collector of antique things - and when she heard about the Main & Water Home Page that I had posted here, she sorted through her things and found this antique post card of Main and Water Streets in the early 1900's. The card is postmarked June 11, 1909 - so it is authentic. If you look closely, you can see the Werdenberg building on the left - so the view is looking east on Water Street across the intersection of Main.

If you'd like to know any details on the postcard (where she found it, etc.) you can contact Marlene at her e-mail address: miatabelle@aol.com.

Editors note: Please click anywhere on the picture above to see a full-size version of it.

11-07-98 - Dan Reibson - dreibson@pacbell.net

Did you know that Erv was also Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts Troop 7 that met at the old Pennsylvania Ave. Methodist Church? That's when it was at (I think) Penna. Ave. and Spruce Street. It moved out toward Pine City in about 1960. I also worked for Erv--my first paying job--from 1954 to 1956. Then I bagged groceries at the Acme Supermarket (close to Larry Bohl's house) at the Southport Shopping Center the last two years of high school.

11-07-98 - Peg Fawell Halm - thalm@stny.lrun.com

Pitt's Goodie Shop is now a thing of the past - truly.  The building was demolished about a month ago.  The Elmira Drive-In is indeed a viable operation - I don't know how much but it was open this summer showing some of the latest movies.

We are in the process of moving to Big Flats.  Remember that process?   We plan to move sometime Thanksgiving week andt are laying new carpet, replacing the furnace, etc. Tomorrow the girls and I are going to paint the inside of closets so we can begin to move clothes and such.  What a project!  Beginning to wonder if moving is such a good deal.

11-07-98 - Kathleeen Comfort Shawl - kcshawl@home.com

Hi everybody!  Sorry I couldn't make the reunion.  I am currently in Poway, CA, self-employed as a braille transcriber for 2 school districts and the State Dept. of Education.  Unfortunately, the summertime is my busiest time, getting textbook materials ready for Fall, so it's just about impossible for me to take time off then.

This is a great site -- thanks to Bill Cook for setting it up! The pictures are terrific, and bring back a lot of memories of the "good old days" at Parley Coburn and SHS.

Is it too late to get a copy of the Reunion Book?

10-30-98 - Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net

I would just like to make a few comments on my pictures. How many recognized Diane Lampila, front row right. She has had quite a year and could continue to use our prayers. About a year ago she had a double mastectomy and all the horrendous treatment that follows. Her hair is back (curly) and she is feeling good. This was the first time I had seen her in 35-40 years. Ditto with Polly.  But now that we have hooked up again I am sure we will be seeing them more often. We sure have come a long way.

Editor's Note: Please click anywhere on Laura's picture above to see full size version. And click on the phrase "my pictures" above or click here to see more of Laura's pictures.

Just finished my 20th US Marine Corps Marathon here in Washington, DC.  Didn't win, but this ol' man can still run.

09/28/98 - Carole Boyd - carole@jax.jaxnet.com

I just spent two hours of nostalgia going through this site especially the Whatever Happened page (and the music).  I never thought I would enjoy remembering Scurvy Erv's but 40 years later, it sure brought back memories.

Living almost across the street from your Dad's barber shop and Erv's (at 697 Broadway) My Dad sure enjoyed going to get his hair cut and talking with Clay.  I spent many hours at Erv's reading movie magazines. Erv always kept reminding me that I needed to pay for the magazine, not read it there!  At that time, I was so infatuated with Hollywood and movie stars.  Plus, I had the worst crush on Tom Wylie who also worked at Erv's.  Guess my infatuation with Hollywood was one of the reasons I lived in Beverly Hills, CA for a few years.

My cousins, Gayle Baldwin Early and Donna Makres McConnell, told me about this site.  You've done a super job putting this together. Reading about the times at Dixie BBQ, dances at the "Y" and youth fellowship at Franklin Street Presbyterian Church all brought back fond memories. Think my Dad even sold one of his cars to Steve Eastman.

Saw both Gayle and Donna at my Dad's funeral at Olthoff's last time I was in Elmira (Feb 1997). Sorry I missed the reunion.  Hopefully, will make it one of these years.

I wasn't in grad class of 58 or 59 but should have been..if I had not failed 8th grade in parley coburn and 9th in shs for skipping record number of days ==so in 58 I was in the air force==and Sarasota Fla. the past 27 years. Enjoyed the 58 photos and located a few old lost friends on the web, thanks.

08/31/98 - Peggy Lewis Dougherty - Docs1Lady@aol.com

Always knew we were the "Best", just received my reunion booklet, and again must say -----We Do It Right. Looking forward to keeping in touch. This Website is Superior, for sure. Hi to each of the class of "58", with special thoughts, Would love to hear from you, Love ya.

08/28/98 -John Friends - JohnFriends@compuserve.com

Thanks for an extraordinary accomplishment with the SHS web page. Had I not been out of the country that weekend, I would have attended the reunion, even if I did not graduate from SHS.  Out of what you did, I established contact with Nancy Wood, who lived across the street from me in Dansville until I moved to Elmira, and later she also moved to Elmira; and Barb Tremaine, who sent me e-mail as a mysterious blond who knew my past and challenged me to guess her identity.  There is something of the spiritual in creating community. Best regards.

Subject: 50's Cars

I saw your web page for the class of 1958's cars and am attaching a picture of my 1958 Buick.  I learned to drive on one when I was 16 and have restored this one.  Please feel free to add it to your web page.  The car is a 1958 Buick Limited - the top of the line for that year's Buicks - and definitely the class of 58.

08/18/98 - Beth Holleran - jakeandbeth@webt.com

Just had to send a message regarding your website.  It is remarkable! Way to go!  I graduated in 1982 and we have yet to reach the technological advancement.  Please, pass along to my former classmates to catch up to the 90's and get a website!

08/18/98 - Curtis Cowan - ccowan@cableregina.com

Dear Class of '58,  Hello, how are you? I am looking for classic car calendars or photographs that are suitable for framing. (at least 8x10) Such photos as 57 Chevy Bel Air, 63 Corvette, and early 60s convertibles, etc. Do you sell anything like this? Or do you know of anyone who does. I would really appreciate any help with this. E-mail me at ccowan@cableregina.com. Also, I am an Elvis Impersonator that also books other Impersonators as well. You can check my site at www.cableregina.com/users/ccowan. Thank you.

08/17/98 - Larry Bohl - lbohl@binghamton.edu

Another Crosley voice heard from. Some will remember my Crosley wagon (black with white trim...hand painted naturally). The doors never stayed shut...especially going around corners. It's transmission was far from faithful. I remember one time being at a friends house late at night and the transmission would not go in reverse. My father came, picked up the back end of it, swung it around and I drove home...grounded for some time thereafter. The little bug could hold 11 teens...honest. And, they weren't all my size either. For example, Warren Hill, who was very tall even then. Just a memory jogged by your Erv story.

07/30/98 - Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com

I saw a lot of cameras flashing at this wonderful event of ours last week-end. I just wanted you to know that there is plenty of room here at the website for more pictures and I'd like to receive them from you if possible. Please contact me and arrange to have them mailed so that I can scan them, or if you'd like to scan them locally, we can arrange to have you send them to me electronically if that would be better.

07/29/98 - Laura Fanning Begeal - begeal@norwich.net

I want to thank the committee for all their hard work and making the reunion a success, again. Also to Bill for his wonderful contribution. It has been such fun seeing and hearing from old friends.  I thought for a bunch of old people we still look pretty good. Next time it will be the blue hair and walkers, not. Keep in touch.

07/28/98 - Nancy Wood O'Hare - beecher4@aol.com

The  Reunion  Committee  proved  that   "We  all  can  come  home  again!" What  a  beautiful  weekend  to  be  in  the  Chemung  Valley  and  Keuka Lake  to  see  our  now  "older"  friends." Great  to  see  the  accomplishments  of  all  our  classmates.

Loved  the Orthstar Tour,  Jim.  Thanks,  also,  to  Bill  Cook  for  keeping  us "computer literate."

I just wanted to send a quick note to say how much my wife and I enjoyed all the activities at our class reunion this past weekend.  I especially want to thank you for the Web page and its many updates.  It helped peak my interest for attending the reunion and the information on E-mail addresses and such has enabled me to get back in touch with some ol' long lost friends...  Thanks again!

This bulletin is for the Class of '59. Joan Dersham, my wife, has suggested I set up a web page for the Class of '59.  I have agreed. Anyone with suggestions or information, please contact me. I will be in Elmira, staying at the Holiday Inn on Water Street the 24th and 25th for the Class of '58 reunion.

The booklet is just about ready to go to press.  All of a sudden there seems to be much activity via mail with the blue sheets and reservations coming in.

We should make the goal of 100+ attendees.

Well, you have finally found me. I am well and retired in Las Vegas Nevada. I received the flyer on the reunion and will do some hard planning to see if we can make it. In the meantime I will send in a bio...

Hi Folks, just an old Elmira resident visiting your website.  It is a great web page emblematic of the 50's.  Left Elmira from P. S. #9 and hung out at Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake, Ca, a suburb of Beautiful Downtown Burbank.    Ken Sullivan

5/24/98 - Jim Reidy - jreidyjr@eznet.net

I am not a 1958 graduate of SHS. I am a 1962 graduate of SHS. Boy how I would like to be able to go back to those days. What a great time it was to be a teenager and we didn't even realize it. I have just retired from Kodak in Rochester, N.Y. after 29 years. I live in Geneva, N.Y. You may remember my brother, Mike Reidy. He graduated in the class of 1960. I got the SHS address from Linda Philips Rice in Oregon. Let me know if I got through to you ok.
Sincerely,
Jim Reidy

P.S.      Is there any other SHS addresses that you know of? Or a school address? It would be nice if I could get online with someone from the class of 62.

4/30/98 - Linda Phillips Rice - hrice@ipinc.net

My kids think I am definitely from "Happy Days" when I mention about all the fun we had at the old hang outs minus the booze, drugs, Aids ,and gang violence we have today. I am sad for their loss...a Blend or cherry Coke at Murtaughs after a long hike up Mt Zoar heading home or burger and fries at Dixie Bar B Que after a movie that was not R Rated...or even the famous 15 cent pizza and ice cream eating sessions at Scurvy Erv`s Scrounge Lounge on Broadway! The old hangouts served a valuable service...they were a general meeting place devoid of parents where kids could meet to discuss their latest flames, homework, latest football triumph, getting a car (or motor scooter),the dreaded Regents exams and a lot more. Fran Murtaugh, Big Pat at Dixie, Erv Peckham and others probably thought we`d never grow up but we did.....and have fond memories of those days gone by when life was simpler and we all were YOUNG!  :)  Linda Phillips Rice

4/16/98 - Jack Wheeler - JRWheeler@LSAF.com

This is another voice from the past, Jack Wheeler. I have not been able to attend any of the reunions since the 15th that was held at the Airport Restaurant. Lots has changed for me; older, greyer, a little heavier, and certainly much wiser.

I was really impressed with the web page and congratulate Bill on the excellent job! I too am looking forward to July and have planned to spend time at my home in Fassett, PA for a brief vacation. My wife Carol [Carol L. Fisher, SHS Class of 1967, former Pine City kid] and I have kept our home in Fassett as the career has moved us around the country. We get back there as often as possible, always for the holidays, and usually for time in the summer.

Unlike some people, we view the Elmira area as the perfect retirement location. We are preparing our home for that day when we can return full time. July should be great fun! We look forward to seeing everyone.

Has anyone commented on the irony that many of us from the Class of 58 will be 58 [years old] at the reunion? There must be some mystic significance to that. See you in July.

Talked to Barb Tremaine today she said has been having trouble with computing but hopes to be back on line after Easter. Don't give up on her.

4/02/98 - Peg Halm - thalm@stny.lrun.com

This is probably the best way we will have of keeping our address records current.  I imagine between this reunion and the next many (most) of us will be retiring and living the life of leisure.  One thing is for sure - Donna is retiring this year and she sees everyone at the bank to get addresses.  We need to be sure to keep in touch and this web page will be it!    Looking forward to seeing you. Margaret

4/02/98 - Jim Orsillo - orsillo@orthstar.com

Just a quick note. I am planning to attend on friday night and sunday brunch  reuninon and see some of you that are attending this year.  I cannot stand the idea of being on a boat or a bus to get to the boat. I spoke with Gene Augustine's former mother-in-law yesterday and she told me that Gene remains in the coma.  Hope for recovery is extremely limited. It is a very sad time for all who love and depend on him. We can only keep him and his family in our prayers.

3/24/98 - Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com

Never mind. I was able to find out Laureen Lofstrom's E-Mail address by searching on Altavista - her address is: lkozlow@infoblvd.net. I have made updates to all the pages here to reflect that. As Arnie Green would have said were he here with us today, "Laureen! Fix dat mailer software!"

3/23/98 - Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com

Special message to Laureen Lofstrom and friends of Laureen Lofstom:
Laureen logged in and signed the guest book yesterday, but the E-Mail address she has plugged into her mailer software isn't working for us. If you know her correct E-Mail address or could contact her and find out what it is and let us know, we'd appreciate it. Thanks.

3/21/98 - George Lovell - gfljr@lebmofo.com

I was in Elmira a couple of weeks ago, the place sure has changed over the past forty years. The school as a school being gone, the hangout store across the street now a very good place for hot wings. Sure doesn't seem like forty years has gone by. Life does go on. Catch you all later.

3/18/98 - Bill Simons - wsimons@doitnow.com

Dear fellow SHS friends,
I graduated class 68....do you know when their reunion is and who to contact?

3/16/98 - Larry Bohl - lbohl@binghamton.edu

Hey Gang,
Bill...you have done a great job. Been one of the early followers.

Many of the lost have been found. Anybody heard from Warren Hill and Don Moffit yet? I've lost touch. I check the site frequently to see what's up, what's new, etc. Take care. Larry.

3/9/98 - Bill Cook - wdcook@enteract.com

From what I am hearing from various alumni and news sources, Gene's condition has not improved. It appears that they are holding out as much hope for his recovery as one could expect at this juncture, but I detect from what I am hearing that his chances for a recovery are very much in doubt. Something about brain activity and vital signs. We will keep you posted on any news we hear.

3/4/98 - Judy Sadler Pratt - Jude400@aol.com

Don't know if you have heard any more from Peg but Gene is still on the critical list, but does have some brain activity. Last I heard today before I left work. They had almost decided to remove him from life support but a ct scan showed the brain activity so they have postponed it for now.

3/2/98 - Sandy Dean Leach sleach@stny.lrun.com

My niece is getting married July 25, but I plan to be at the festivities Friday night and again on Sunday.  Sorry I will miss the Keuka Maid.  I wish I had a choice, but I really don't.  Looking forward to seeing everyone.

2/28/98 - From Peg Fawell Halm thalm@stny.lrun.com

I have some bad news for you.  I talked with Bruce and he suggested that I forward this information so that you can put it on the WEB page.  This news was up to date at the end of the workday on Friday.  I will give you an update Monday evening.

Gene Augustine had a heart attack around 6:00 a.m. on the 23rd.  He was taken to the Arnot Ogden medical Center and placed in ICU.  His condition was not good at all (10% chance of survival).  They performed angioplasty. Apparently after this, his heart stopped and they opened him up to massage his heart.  He is now in a drug induced coma but his condition has improved to stable and a 50% chance of survival   A neurologist was being called in to evaluate any brain damage.  It will be a long road to recovery.

Street talk this morning (grocery store) has it that he has 20% brain activity.  As I said before, I should have an update on Monday and will forward it to you. On a brighter note, there was an article in the Star Gazette this morning regarding alumni WEB pages.   They treated us well in the Star Regret!

2/28/98 - From Mike Murtaugh muircu@worldnet.att.net

What a hoot! I haven't been through all the details yet but both of my brothers and sister are on the net and will enjoy landing on this page.

At the end of March I'll be in North Carolina, at Jim Murtaugh's, to celebrate my mother's 85th birthday. An internet visit then will make a nifty memory review for her.

Thanks again, for the memories.
