Whatever Happened to Larry Bohl? 1958's Larry Bohl
1958's Larry Bohl

by Janet Minnick Bohl (Larry's wife)

Hello from Endwell, New York.

After prodding and nagging a bit, I have finally decided that the only way Larry's entry will ever be submitted for the SHS class of '58's collection of biographies, is for me to do it secretly. I can't condense 40 years into 100 words or less, so herewith is my account.

We met at SUNY Geneseo after Larry had graduated from Paul Smiths College in the Adirondacks. Now, after 35 years of married life, he is the proud father of Sean, a manager on the industrial Engineering Department of American Express in Greensboro, NC and Scot, a Customer Service representative at Realty Information Group, in Bethesda, MD. Alex, the adorable, charming (I'm biased) son of Sean and his wife, Debbie, is Grandpa Larry's pride and joy.

But I've skipped a lot. A couple of years ago when he received a coveted award in the Public Relations Society of the Southern Tier, a fellow member, Marty Doorey, wrote a biographical sketch entitled, Larry Bohl: Volunteer Activities Enhance His Stature, for the PR Counselor. I will take the liberty of quoting excerpts from the article.

"When the PRSST recently named Larry Bohl as one of its three Lifetime Members, it only served to heighten his stature within the group . . . Larry, who has been a PRSST member for 24 of the organization's 25 years, has an extensive career in journalism and public relations, and his volunteer service resume is nearly as long as his work resume.

" . . . Larry is Marketing Coordinator for the Anderson Center for the Arts at Binghamton University. He also works as a House Operations Manager for the Anderson Center.

"The bulk of Larry's career was spent at the Singer Company / Link Flight Simulation, primarily in public relations and communications, where he held a succession of jobs during his 20-year tenure with the company. In his role as an editor and communications specialist, Larry oversaw all the company's internal and external communications including employee and community relations activities.

"Prior to Link, he was a reporter and editor with the Sun-Bulletin and The Vestal News. ...Larry's start in public relations began at Paul Smiths College where he was an English and Public Relations major. . . .During his career with Link, his experiences also included a stint as part of the company's Loaned Executive Program serving as Assistant Metro Director of the National Alliance of Business. He had previously worked as an Engineering Aide for the Town of Vestal, when he wrote and published a brochure on the town's history as well as rewrote the town's sub-division code.

"As noted previously, Larry's volunteer resume reads like a second resume. Within the PRSST, for instance, he has held almost every office the group has to offer -- some more than once.

"Over the years, Larry has been very involved with the American Cancer Society's Broome County unit, serving as a Board Member and Chair of the Communications Committee. He was also on the Tri-County Lung Association Board of Directors for a number of years and did statewide-level public relations work for the group.

"One of the roles in which the public has benefited greatly from Larry's work is the numerous United Way of Broome County campaigns (He's the Vice Chair / Public Relations for 1998.) He has also found time to serve as an Advisory Council Member and Public Relations chair for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program...

"He has also coached Little League as part of being a devoted father. at Grace Lutheran Church in Vestal, he has served in numerous offices and committees and sung in the choir for over 30 years. In fact, he has been Chairman of the congregation so many times, even he can't remember how many!

"Given all this experience, anyone familiar with Larry and his extensive resume, has no trouble believing that he stands about 7 feet tall."

He daily walks to stay in shape. Together, we love to travel, when he can pry me away from my job as an administrator at the Broome-Tioga BOCES. Together, we serve actively in many roles for Aid Association for Lutherans regionally and statewide.

I guess the best way to sum up is to admit that he is so busy with work and activities that it is no wonder that he never had time to type his autobiography for you!
