courtesy of Marlene Swimelar Ascherl, Class of '57 The corner of Main and Gray Streets was home of the world famous Mark Twain Hotel for years. Every major high school event, the proms, the banquets, the formals were held in the Mark Twain's Ballroom. Remember the rotating ball in the center of the room? Remember the big bands, live music that we danced to - the Glenn Stuart Orchestra, Bud McNaught's Big Band, The Dick Hamlin Orchestra? Here's the Mark Twain in all its glory in the early 1970's with Fanny Farmer Candies Company occupying its front corner space. Is that Arney there in the little red car? No? Guess he must have gotten out and gone for a walk down Gray Street. Maybe he's at the Elmira Theatre on College near Water Street. Click on the map below and see if that's where he went. |
