Anyone who attended SHS in the 50s remembers our beloved principal Arney Greene. As good a Hornet fan as he was, it seems he wasn't exactly instrumental in keeping the school colors Green and White. At one point in his tenure, it was rumored that he had tried to get them changed to Greene and Greene, but Rollie White objected saying it was an affront to the White Family name - and the rest is history. Anyway, who ever won an argument with Rollie? Here's your chance to find out what happened to Arney. After all these years - where is he? What has he been up to and when was he up to it? And at the same time, you'll learn a little bit about the history of Elmira and Chemung County. This is a game that you'll want to play again and again on your visits to our web site. Every week or so, we'll put up a new page for you to visit as we build this exciting and labor-intensive game before your very eyes. So let's get started. We don't have EVERY landmark showing on our map of Elmira - just some of the memorable ones, like the Keeney Theatre and the Mark Twain Hotel. Arney has to be somewhere on that map. You can begin by moving your mouse pointer down on the picture below and clicking on the statue on Main Street. It's located near the corner of Main and Church Streets. Is that a statue of Arney Greene? Arney said that he always wanted to be remembered somehow. So maybe that's where you'll find him - looking at his own statue? |
